Mjoll the Lioness is still the best follower I've found for my play-style. Give them Shield of Solitude or Shield of Ysgramor, perhaps a ring and necklace with some magic resistance (Or enchant the whole set if you can) and they will be unkillable. Also, he has yet to turn wolf during battle except the cut-scene with the silver-hand, so I went back to Mjoll.Yeah, I like Mjoll too. I know a tank is supposed to rush to some degree, but he tries to take on 8 at once. Vilkas is alright, but you have to join the companions, and he tends to rush too much. Mjoll is two handed, heavy armor specialist and apparently is immortal. He only wins because he is the only follower that can level all the way to 81 with you. The other winner is J'zargo, the Khajiit student in the College of Winterhold.
There are a handful of other essential followers, but she is just a favorite. She is a essential character so she can't be killed. You should always choose the follower you personally like the most but some are better than others.
These NPCs journey with you, encountering huge beasts, betrayals and quests. With the release of the Skyrim Special Edition, it’s about time the best followers covered. Skyrim is still going strong, even after all these years.
